THE FIVE WORLD EMPIRES

themselves by having blood connection or matrimonial alliances among the rulers.

But they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. These words are very important—Man's endeavour has failed hope- lessly in bringing about unity among the Nations of the world but God's words have stood unmoved.

The students of ancient and modern European history can give evi- dence whether the words of this prophecy concerning the image of the dream dreamt by the king Nebuchadnezzar are true or not line by line. By the attacks of Alemanni (German), Franks (French), Burgandians (Swit- zerland and France), Suevi (Portuguese), Anglo-Saxons (English), Vejegths (Spanish), Lombards (Italian) etc., the great Roman empire was divided into many small states and kingdoms. This divided Roman empire could not be united and formed into one world-wide empire on earth. In modern days we see these kingdoms are busy in engaging them- selves in war and war preparations. By treaty or by having victory in war no lasting peace can be enjoyed by the present world. All their attempts have failed, e, g.

In the 8th century Charlemage
" " 16th " Charles V
" " 18th " Louis XIV
" " 19th " Napolean Bonaparte
" " 20th " Kaiser (World War I)
⸺ ⸺ ⸺ Hitler (World War II)

It is crystal clear from the above examples that all great heroes or conquerers have failed to bring the world as a whole under one flag. No great tyrant or great conquerer could or can bring lasting peace in Europe.

We can know by studying the history of the world how the princes and the princesses have married one another to make alliance and to remain united. Some examples are:

The sons and daughters of Christiana IX, the King of Denmark—

 one son,—The ruler of Denmark

one daughter, —Queen of England (the wife of Edward VII)

another son,—The King of Greece and

 another daughter—the Czarina of Russia.
