OPINIONS OF THE PRESS
AND THE PUBLIC
I
Times of Assam. Saturday, May 9, 1896— “Review— An Assamese Poetical book in manuscript named Jayan-Malini (জ্ঞান-মালিনী ) has been kindly placed in our hands by its author Munshi Mofizuddin Ahmed Hazorika, son of Moulvie Md. Himmatuddin Hazorika of Dibrugarh. To speak the truth, it has never been our lot before to have come across such a first class compilation in Assamese. We have read books of the best Assamese writer, and we may say without exaggeration and without meaning any disrespect to other authors that the book under review is simply incomparable. In the selection of the subjects, for flight of imagination, sublimity of thought, elegance of style, and above all, for purity of language, the book is yet unparalleled. We doubt not that even the late lamented Hemchandra Boruah who might be called the parent of the Assamese language would have gladly given the palm to the author of Jnyan-Malini if he had lived to see the Book. It seems Munshi Mofizuddin Ahmed is not born to blush unseen. That his book will be highly welcome to the public when printed goes without saying."
