TRUNK ROAD

Women with their jars and baskets
—water pots on hip and head
 —gayly colored, jewelry sparkling
 —babes on back.

 Yoked men their burdens bearing
 —balanced bamboo
 —clay pots, brassware, paddy
 —tins of water slushing splashing

Amber rays of setting sun : godhuli
 —sky ablaze with golden hue
 —countryside still hot, still humid
 —dust rising.

Homeward trudging, cattle lowing
 — great herds milling, mooing, moving
 —young calves calling
 — large bulls pushing.

Cultivator from the fields
 — bearing on his back the plow
 —bullocks plodding, leads low hung
 —evening light advancing.

Black of night, full of sounds: rati
—full of crickets, frogs, and locusts
—full of cries of far-off jackels
—full of sounds of beating drums.

 —Distant stars appearing
 —light of fires burning
 —flickering lamps now freshly trimmed
—swaying lanterns from the ox carts.

 —Distant rumble of the thunder
 —ever closer, ever louder
 —brilliant flashing, shattering, crashing
 — torrential rainfall.
