PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION Late B. N. Bhattacharyya's Anglo-Assamese-Pronouncing Dictionary was out of print for the last several years. The book is highly spoken of by eminent scholars and is in demand by students of English Literature. Many are even inclined to say that the book is superior to many other existing dictionaries of the kind so far as their requirmentis are concerned. Although the publication of a book of this size is more costly, that what a publishing agency can take up without some disadvantage to it I, at the request of the heirs to late Bhattacharyya, have undertaken the task to meet the public demand by way of doing some service to those for whom the book is intended. In this edition many new words and phrases have been incorporated in the book at their proper places and constitutional and scientific terms with their equivalents in Assamese ils accepted by different committees appointed by the Government of India from time to time and also the table of measures as adopted by the Republic have been appended to the book in the form of appendices. Mathematical symbols and Greek Alphabets have also been inclu- ded in the book. In fine, I have to than, Sri R. K. Mahanta, MA Lecturer in English, Cotton College, Guwahati, and Sri Benudhar Sharma, Ex-president, Assam Sahitya Sabha, for revising the whole book. Sri Mahanta has done the proof reading as far as practicable in the midst of his heavy duties. He has endeared himself to me by his selfless work as my own son and I pray to God for his long life and prosperity. I only hope the book will be found to be useful by the reading public. This fact alone justifies our belief that late B. N. Bhattacharyya's work still commands the unstinted respect and confi- dence of almost all Anglophiles in Assam It is because the book stands on the solid granits quaytli. We trust that the students of Assam can illa-fford to dispense with this ready-reference from their desks. We have taken this opportunity to get the whole book revised by Sri Mahendra Bora, M A.Principal, Goalpara College. We are very thankful to him that he readily agreed to do that. In fact, he has not only revised the whole book very sincerely, but also did a fine job of enlarging its size. He has polished the prononciction, straightened up the meaning, added other mean- ings of some words so as to cover up all the nuances and corrected certain meaning.content in the light of recent research in the field of lexicography. There were certain words though such words were too few, which were mis- placed in the elphabetica, order. He has cushioned them in the proper places. Besides, he has incorporated into the main body of the book altogether 489 new words. After all, English is a dynamic language, with a tremendous capacity for absorpton. Yet, he has incorporated only such words which ought to be within the mental ken of a student. Further, he has also prepared a glossary of scintific terms, which he does not claim to be entirely exhaustive. But we are confident that it would go a long way to satisfy the demand of our student community. We must admire his painst; king revision, though he is head-long deep in his other tasks and responsibilites Lastly, we must inform our customers that the book has grown its size in this edition. Besides, we have also taken a great care to improve the quality of paper and printing. Yet, we refrain from raising its price, so that it may
