THE INFLUENCES OF WESTERN THOUGHTS IN MODERN ASSAMESE LITERATURT

say, doing their best to enrich the cultural backing of the country so as to demand country-wide prestige in India.

Anticipation and assessment: It is no doubt true that a group of writers including all categories, has invested their energy for the foundation of a rich culture and intellectual development. The technique and tendency, style and expression of the western literature is a remarkable feature that deserves consideration. The interplay of different cultures in making up a rich and colourful edifice of culture heritage is of wide significance. But attention should be given to the fact that this marvellous act of absorption of foreign cultures should be moulded in that of our own. This happy blend of cultures is not an imitation, but a style that requires very great intellec- tual depth.

At present the optimistic outlook of the traditional group (both writers and readers) to the "leaning tower" writers is highly desirable. They are telling us the sad tragic and unspoken problems of human life. The future generation of writers will inherit from them a great virtue, as Virginia Woolf says, and make them more bold and courageous. Catholicity of outlook and sense of toleration are necessary for the purpose.

Three men are my friends--he that loves me, he that hates me and he that is indifferent to me. Who loves me, teaches me tenderness; who hates me, teaches me caution ; who is indifferent to me, teaches me self-reliance.

-J. E. Dinger.
