THE INFLUENCES OF WESTERN THOUGHTS IN MODERN ASSAMESE LITERATURE

Not only in poetry, but also in other branches of Assamese literature, the tendency of Western thoughts and idea, Style and technique, are notice- able. The drama in our literature is indebted to that of Shakespear with its characteristie soliloquy, thought, spirit and idea. Even the works of translation of Shakespear's drama are available. 'Bhramaranga' in Assamese is the marvellous translation of 'Comedy of Errors.' So is the case of 'Banij Kawar' which is named in English as the 'Merchant of Venice'.

The modern Assamese noveln have occupied a remarkable place in Assamese literature with its wester cimpact. German, American, Russian French ideas and spirits, forms and compositions stand out eminent in our literature. The tendency of thought, imitation of technique and style from the writings of the famous novelists of those literatures have marked a very great era in our literature.

The writings of Tolstoy, Gorky, Hemingway, Goethe, Somerset Mau- gham are the central forces in the domain of Assamese literature.

Other branches of Assamese literature also owe their allegiance to the western thoughts that cast a bundle of lights with various colours in enri- ching the same to cope with the other literatures in India. Even at the present moment, thanks to the efforts and endeavours of the promising youths and the writers of the country, the position and status of Assamese literature stand equal to other literatures, except a few, in India.

Ultra modern period : The appearance of the neo-Assamese literature in the era is a subject of wide discussion and deliberate criticism current at the present time. The age of romanticism has already taken a sad de- parture from the avenue of modern Assamese literature. The human soul has been in search of social consciousness, social equality and universal peace which the romantic movement lacks. It gave an illusory colour to the idea of isolated being. The striking note of romantic literature, took a final departure in the form of escapism. It is because of the fact the last war had witnessed a vast change in the life of humanity. This change of life gave the change of mood and thought. In the age of doubt and con- fusion, the young writers were influenced by growing need of a progressive society where peace and happiness prevail ; where there is a classless society for the permanent abode of men.

The same social consciousness influenced the Assamese young writers in the last thirtees. The influences of Marx, Freud, Jung, are the charac-
