NTRopucow T according to the teachins of Buddha, are pious acts. This has also been taught by our master-teacher in his Bhania, thus :- “eve dharma kariba jani ; Pukhuri khanja rakhiba pani, Brksa roparat adhika dharma : Mathamandapa sobhana karma. Jei dei take pai; Paralale basi sukhe hai. Anitya dehat nahike as ; Dhane jane bastre kiba biswas. Ji jane dei apnara sari; Sijane nayai yama nagari. Anna-jal maha dan; Tat pare srestha nahi an.” Religion thus played an important part in the growth of Assamese literature. History The history of Assamese literature naturally falls into three main periods, viz, (1) Pre-Vaisnava, (2) Vaisnava and (3) Post-Vaisnava or modern, By the pre-Vaisnava period I mean the period from the earliest time to the birth of the great religious reformer, Sri Sankar Deva (149 A.D.). The Vaisnava period dates from the middle of the fifteenth century and extends, in its latest phase, to the Burmese war i826). The third period begins with the British rule and continues to the present time. | Assamese literature of the first and second periods is metrical. But the metres in which it is found are different from the Sanskrit metres. The principal metres used are, pad, chabi, dola, legedi, jhuna, jhumuri, ekavali, kusumamala, bhatima, totaya and papaya. The songs have different rdas, such as dhanasri, asowari, kamod, suhai, pattamanjari, Thur, malar, bhatiali, tur-bhataff, basanta, amgiri, maur, tri-ndhar, alyan, ahir, gauri, belwar, sindhuda, kau, sym, lalit, st, bhupai, bard, anada, etc. The style is generally simple; only a few poetic forms known as Brajabuli and tansama words are used here and there. In the Vaisnavic ase pআose was employed for the first time in the dramas and late it attained a high dence of development and excellence a Bhattadeva's Katha Gia and Katha Bhagavata in the sixteenth century AD. Previnnova Period:- Ancient Assamese literature dates probably from the thirteenth century A.D. The earliest poets in the field of Assamese literature are Hem Sarasvad and farihar Vipra both of whom fourished during the rein of king Darlabh Nayana in the 13th entry.
