28 অসমীয়া ব্যাকৰণ আৰু ভাষাত (iii) Interrogative pronoun,-“Kai" (=who) :--Vedic-ka-ya” is an extended form of ka” (=kah). It occurs in genitive and is found in combination with “gid” : as,—“Kayasya gid” (=of whomsoever).. (iv) Pronominal adjective,—“ma” and “ene” :-Vedic—“en&” । -- this sort of)=Assamese-ena, ene” (see vocabulary above). (e) Verb | i) Infinitive :-Vedic infinitive suffixes are-tavai tavedu, taven and twelve others : e.g, etave' (to go), kartave (to make), gamtave (to go), datave (to give), bhave to be), etc. In Apabhramsa Prakrt the infinitive suffix is evam” : e.g. Ap. Pr-devan (to give), S.--dmun, =Ass.diba : Ap. Pr.palevi (to maintain), S.pdayitum=Ass.--paliba. There is no doubt that the Assamese infinitive “iba" is a modification of the Vedic suffix tavai”. (See $ 355). (ii) Conjunctive participle:--The Assamese sufix is “j" and old Assamese “” or “iya” (=ia). It is not probably a modification of Sanskrit “Ktva" but of Vedic suffix tvi, tva or tya”, Example :-Vedic,—“Kritvi” = Assamese-- “Kari" (having done) : V.-“gatvi”=Ass.—“gai” (See $ 363). | (ii) Verbal particles “Con” and hait” :--In the Vedas the word “¢an” is an indeclinable, meaning “ever, even" (Rk. I. 24.6). It is usually used after a negative and means “not even” (=(a+na). But sometimes it loses its negative sense. It is then used affirmatively in the sense of even, ever, also". Example:-v.adha can srad dadhati (Rk. I. 55. 5). Eng.--Therefore also they believe. In this sense “pon” is used also in Assamese as a verbal particle : e.g, ka-con (=you even or indeed do this) : mai yaoicon (=I even go or let me go). | In Vedic literature hant” is used as an interjection in exhortation. It means “come!”. In that sense this word “hait” is used in Assamese as a verbal affix: e.g, wahit (=go, I say) : karhat (Come! do this). (f) Taddhit | (i) Assamese secondary derivative suffixes Vanta” and “manta” are probably derived from Vedic through Prakrt (8 454). 1 Macdonell.
