The art of painting was in a rudimentary stage at first. But later in portrait and nature-painting the Assamese attained a high degree of success. This is noticeable speci- ally in the border-painting of the old puthis. Readers acquainted with the Assamese manuscript puthis are struck with wonder at the beauty and excellence of border-painting. Portrait painting also received a high degree of perfection in the Hastividyarmava. For painting the illustra- tions of this book two expert painters were employed. This book may be called a valuable relic of old Assamese painting. Writing Materials- Bark of Sagi tree was generally used for writing the manuscripts. It was coloured and thus made insect-proof.
