অসমীয়া ব্যাকৰণ আৰু ভাষাতত্ত্ব Sukavi Narayan Deve - His date was later than the time of Sri Caitanya Deva who was younger in years than Sankar Deva. He wrote the Padma Purana, an artificial epic, describing the sorrow and wanderings of Bephula. An invocation (Bandana) to gaitanya Deva is incorporated in this book. A war between Hasan Hussain and Padmavati is also described in it. Gopal misra:- He was a disciple of Sri Deva Damodar and he founded the Ulubari and Khudia Satras. He wrote Ghosa Ratna. | Space will not permit us to give details of the very large number of other poets of this age, Classification We now proceed to classify the Assamese Literature of this period into works of Poetry, works of Science and Art and works of Law and Custom. The bulk of old Assamese literature is in a poetic, or rather in a metrical, form. All•of them are not, however, real poetry. Most of the works exist, even to-day, in manuscript forms. The earliest manus- cripts are only 300 to 400 years old. It is said that manuscripts written by Sri Sankar Deva and Madhava Deva themselves are still extant. As is natural no two copies of the same work age in all respects. Altera- tions are common. This is due partly to an attempt to correct arbitrarily the supposed mistakes in words and foms in order to make them conform to the modern standard and partly to the mistakes of transcribers. | In the works of Assamese poetry I shall include among others the epics and lyrics under the common name of religious poetry dealing, how- ever, the other branches of poetical works under separate headings. (A) Works of Poetry (i) Religious Poetry | it will be impossible in the narrow compass of this book to give details of the various works. I shall content myself by giving only a list of the important works of this period, thus :- | POST POETICAL WORKS Sri Sankar Deva .. A mit Upakhyan. Adi Dasam (Bhagavata, Book x), Utkalamala.
