SOME ASSAMESE PROVERBS. 128. | Hype1g0mg. নৰকৰ কন্যা উদ্ধাৰিলেই শুচি। Narakar kanya uddharilei shuchi. | A girl (bride) from hell is purified when taken up. | Even girls of a lower status in society are allowed to be married by men of a higher status, in the same caste, cf. Manu “ স্বীৰত্নং দুস্কুলাদপি।” নৰক is one of the many infernal regions enumerated in the IIindu books. Manu speaks of twenty-one hells and gives their names. Other authorities vary greatly as to the numbers and names of the hells. (See Vishnu Puran, II, 214, and Dowson's Classical Dictionary of Ilindu Mythology.) 128. Cutting of the tigers tail. নেগুৰ কাটি বাঘ চোঙ্গলৈ মেলিলে। Negur kati bagh chongali melile. They cut off the tiger's tail, aid then let him loose in his haunt. This refers to the inadvisability of letting off a bad cha- racter with a light punishment. i24. A mame that bods ill-lack. মৰ পৰিছে সং দুৱাৰত মৰহি দাঙ্গ। Namar parichhe sing duarat marabi dang. The mam (singing of religious songs) is over, shut the door. সাং finished, over. It is usual to shut the door of the mamghar when prayers are over. 125. “ People anho late in glass hou৪s should not throus stones. নাহাহিবি মোক, খুচৰিব তোক। | Nahahibi mok, khuchariba tok, Don't laugh at me, you will catch the contagion (if you do).
