been written with a view to bring into prominence some important features in the language which may be stumed up as follows : (1Being the farthest outpost of Aryan migration towards the East, Assam has preserved in her lang uage up to this day some relies of the ancient Indo German language which have been lost in other parts of India, being overlaid by the speeches of subsequent vals , e. g. ( a ) The Indo-German “ক” in place of the Sanskrit “শ’ : ( b ) The casy interchange of “ক” with “প” and so, of “গ” with “ব’ ; the latter I think being responsible for the derivation of the word বঙ্গ from the word "‘গঙ্গ’ ( river ; i. e. the country of । rivers ). The interchange of “গ” with “‘ব' ’ suggests also the indentity of the Future particles of Hindi and Bengali Some words and affixes or Dardic origin. The Austro-Asiatice origin of some words and specially of the Past particle “ল’ of Eastern India. 4) A different origin for the Possessive " ‘’’ has also been suggested.
